One hundred years since the outbreak of the First World War, the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, and the Dmitri Ensemble, under the direction of Graham Ross, perform Victoria’s 1605 Requiem, said by many to be one of the finest Renaissance works, alongside Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony Op. 110a, dedicated ‘to the victims of fascism and war’.

In this programme of Music for the Departed, voices and strings combine for Beethoven’s Elegischer Gesang, Brahms’ much-loved Geistliches Lied, Tarik O’Regan’s setting of John Fletcher’s Care charminge sleepe – the composer’s first collaboration with the Choir of Clare College – and Graham Ross’ setting of Siegfried Sassoon’s Secret Music. The programme concludes with a rare combined performance of Adagio for Strings/Agnus Dei, arguably Barber’s most poignant work.
