Christine Tobin Trio

Out to Lunch 2014

Christine Tobin
Phil Robson
Dave Whitford
double bass

The multi-award winning artist sings from her highly acclaimed CD A Thousand Kisses Deep, new arrangements of Leonard Cohen songs to celebrate the Canadian poet on his 80th birthday. Her programme includes new versions of Cohen classics such as Famous Blue Raincoat, Tower of Song and Suzanne. In 2013 she won a ‘Herald Angel Award’ at the Edinburgh Festival for this show and earlier this year BBC Music Magazine wrote that she had ‘struck gold with this album’ in a 5-star review.

Christine Tobin has earned a reputation as a both a spellbinding interpreter and original writer. Here she weaves her magic with the poetic genius of Leonard Cohen. Her stellar trio features two of the U.K.‘s most acclaimed musicians: Phil Robson on guitar and Dave Whitford on double bass.

‘Christine Tobin is inspiring on her own material. But she is in a class of her own singing Leonard Cohen. Her new version of ‘Everybody Knows’ is stunning… Gorgeous, affecting and deeply human.’ (The Guardian ★ ★ ★ ★)

‘Christine Tobin really transcends glib genre-fication. Her expressive range acknowledges finely acquired folk, jazz and 20th-century classical influences, which already sets her apart. And everything is shot through with an unmistakable refinement, free-spirited earthiness and giddy romanticism, this singer-songwriter is in a field of one.’ (MOJO ★ ★ ★ ★)

Winner of: ‘Jazz Vocalist of the Year’ at the 2014 Parliamentary Jazz Awards; ‘Herald Angel Award’ at the 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe; a 2012 ‘British Composer Award’; and ‘Best Vocalist’ at the 2008 BBC Jazz Awards.
