English Chamber Choir

Maximilian Steinberg: Passion Week

Venue: Holy Trinity Church, Sloane Square, SW1X 9BZ

Maximilian Steinberg
Passion Week

Preceded by music by Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky

The English Chamber Choir are proud to be the first European choir to perform one of the last major sacred work composed in Russia after the 1917 Revolution: Maximilian Steinberg’s Passion Week.

This profoundly moving work extends the musical language of the Rachmaninov Vespers. Maximilian Steinberg 1883-1946, was a student of Rimsky-Korsakov and teacher of Shostakovich. He composed this piece when sacred music was banned in Russia; it was never performed in his lifetime.

The English Chamber Choir and conductor Guy Protheroe have a long history of performing Orthodox music from the Russian and Greek traditions.

6.30pm: Pre-concert talk with the distinguished scholar Dr Alexander Lingas (City University London and Oxford University) who discovered this work and gave the world premiere with his U.S. based choir Cappella Romana who have also recorded the work.
