EFG London Jazz Festival: Kenny Wheeler – An Evocation

There’s a rather special show happening at the EFG London Jazz Festival — a tribute to Kenny Wheeler that features some exceptional ensembles combining to celebrate his life and work. The line-up and programme are now confirmed, so we wanted to give you an idea of how the show’s going to work.

Dave Holland and Norma Winstone combine on a set which includes a duet with Norma and Dave, a trio with Nikki Iles and two pieces from the Edition CD Mirrors adding members of the London Vocal Project. They are also joined by additional players, including Henry Lowther and Mark Lockheart. Stan Sulzmann, John Parricelli, Gwilym Simcock, Chris Laurence and Martin France play repertoire from Kenny’s last ECM record Songs for Quintet.

Evan Parker worked with Kenny often over the years in the context of free improvisation — Evan revisits one of their last collaborations with the group Foxes Fox, with Steve Beresford, John Edwards and Louis Moholo-Moholo, joined by one of the leading trumpeter’s of a younger generation, Percy Pursglove.

And finally, the brilliant guitarist, Ralph Towner, another old colleague of Kenny’s, plays an intimate solo set.

The spirit of the evening is very much one of collaboration — you can expect some other moments to emerge on the evening in tribute to a master musician and a modest giant of jazz.
