The Almagro Ensemble is a new group which aims to present some of the new innovations in tango from Argentina to a European audience, commission new works from Argentine composers and compose brand new music exploring the space between the tango, jazz and contemporary classical worlds.
Lucy Waterhouse, a graduate of London’s Guildhall and Indiana University, has worked with many world-class orchestras, including the Norwegian Opera and Oslo Philharmonic when she lived in Norway. She formed Tango Volcano, her own tango band, back in 2001 after studying tango in Buenos Aires, funded by a Churchill Memorial Scholarship.
John Turville is an experienced composer as well as a trained classical and jazz pianist. He directs the E17 big band and has received numerous awards from MOJO, the Parliamentary Awards, the London Jazz Awards and the Promoter’s Choice Award. He has worked and recorded with many of Europe’s leading jazz and tango groups, and his own trio have toured widely throughout the UK and Europe.
Chris Allard has performed at many prestigious venues and festivals, from the Royal Festival Hall and London O2 Arena to the Montreux and Duoro Jazz Festivals. He leads his own band, which has performed all over the UK and in Europe, including the International Guitar Festival and Ronnie Scott’s.
Tom Mason developed an interest in jazz in his late teens and attended the Royal Academy of Music, attaining a First Class Honours degree. He studied with renowned bassist Cecil McBee and has since built a reputation as one of the most versatile and in-demand bassists in the UK today.
Bartosz Glowacki is one of the leading lights of a new generation of accordionists. His artistic goal is to continue to improve awareness of the accordion in classical music, as well as to develop a new repertoire for his instrument. He graduated from The Royal Academy of Music with a first class diploma and Regency Award and is now a postgraduate student at RAM, a City of Music Foundation 2016 artist and artist in residency at Aldeburgh Music.
