The Royal College of Music Junior Department offers advanced training to young musicians aged 8–18 on term time Saturdays and is a community of great enthusiasm, opportunity and enjoyment. They are committed to nurturing potential and offer a warm, creative yet disciplined environment in which to do so. Energy, focus, and dedication are prominent features of the department in students and staff alike.

The RCMJD Symphony Orchestra is one of five orchestras in the Junior Department and represents some of the finest young musical talent in the country. With over 90 members it performs termly at the RCM and at external venues. Their age range is 15 – 18, and many of the orchestra are current members of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. The Orchestra studies a wide and demanding repertoire, often works with distinguished soloists and has toured throughout Europe and the USA.

The orchestra was a regular guest of Richard Stilgoe in his Family Concert series at the Royal Festival Hall and in 2006, recorded Elgar’s Nursery Suite, with Sir Mark Elder conducting, as part of HM The Queen’s 80th Birthday Celebrations. In July 2010 the orchestra performed the Saint-Saëns Second Piano Concerto with fellow JD student and BBC Young Musician 2010 Lara Melda, and in December 2012 accompanied the newly crowned 2012 BBC Young Musician Laura van der Heijden, also an RCMJD student, in a performance of the Walton Cello Concerto.
